The core components in Language Teaching (LT) is methodology—the notion of a systematic set of teaching practices based on a particular theory of language and language learning, that is to link theory and practice. Theory statements would include theories of what language is and how language is learned or, more specifically, theories of second language acquisition (SLA). Such theories are linked to various design features of language instruction. These design features might include stated objectives, syllabus specifications, and types of activities, roles of teachers, learners, materials, and so forth. Design features in turn are linked to actual teaching and learning practices as observed in the environments where language teaching and learning take place. This whole complex of elements defines language-teaching methodology, which should be included in educational planning and implementation.
An effective language instruction is inseparable with a good curriculum. With this reason, the Language Center of the Islamic University of Sultan Syarif Kasim Riau organized a workshop on Curriculum-Syllabus Design and Textbook Writing. This workshop was held in Rindu Sempadan Kabupaten Siak Sri Indrapura.
This curriculum and syllabus design as well as textbook writing tried to accommodate the students’ learning styles, preferences, and needs. In this workshop, Language Center invited two plenary speakers, Prof. DR. H. Zainil, MA., Ph. D from UNP Padang, and DR. H. Muhbib, MA from UIN Malang. The curriculum and syllabus designed as well as the textbook will be a set of guidelines for language teaching at Language Center of the Islamic University of Sultan Syarif Kasim Riau. The products are hopefully to be effective and applicable.
